May 6, 2020 ALEXANDRIA, VA—As part of its ongoing efforts to provide relief amid the COVID-19 pandemic, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today contributed $10,000 to ALIVE!, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to help provide emergency assistance to those in need in the city of Alexandria.
In a presentation today, ALIVE! Executive Director Jennifer Ayers received the donation, which will be used to purchase bulk food supplies estimated to result in as many as 25,000 meals to Alexandrians suffering the impact of the global crisis.
“ALIVE! is highly appreciative of the donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one of our long-standing member congregations, to support the growing need for food in Alexandria during the coronavirus pandemic. The $10,000 donation will be put to immediate use to purchase food at low cost to provide families in our community with groceries,” said Ms. Ayers. “We are heartened to see our congregations coming together to work toward serving all those in need. The donation from your faith community underscores our shared commitment as people of faith to serve those who are calling for help and we are grateful for your support in our joint efforts to serve all those who call for assistance.”
“ALIVE! is a great organization and we’re pleased to work together with them in providing support for those in need in the community,” said President Keith Davey, the leader of Mt. Vernon Virginia Stake of the Church. “A key tenet of our faith is that of service to our fellow men is an expression of our love and service to God.”
Comprised of over 45 faith communities, ALIVE! was organized in 1969 and serves thousands each month by providing food, shelter, emergency help and education. The Alexandria 3rd Ward, a local congregation of the Church, has been part of ALIVE! for many years.
Latter-day Saint Charities has donated 280 COVID relief projects in over 80 countries. Within the United States, 15 truckloads of commodities from the Church’s storehouses are being delivered each week to food banks and other charitable organizations across the country.
The $10,000 donation to ALIVE! is part of $5.5 million in cash donations being provided by the Church to key relief agencies in the U.S. including Convoy of Hope, Feeding America, Partnership with Native Americans, the Salvation Army and United Way.
In addition to financial assistance, the Church also provides personal assistance through volunteer service in nationwide service opportunities.
