Starting mid-day August 18 through August 20, ALIVE! staff will have a retreat to reset the ALIVE! offices, team build, and rejuvenate. Please excuse any delays in responses. Food distributions and other pre-scheduled ALIVE! activities during this time will continue as planned.

Share ‘Get Help Today’ Flyer

Please share in your congregation’s bulletins and newsletters. ALIVE! developed a “Get Help Today” flyer for clients to contact ALIVE! Programs for help and find additional resources for referral to ALIVE! or additional services. Washington Street UMC COVID-19 Impact Panel

COVID-19 Impact Video Screening and Panel Discussion at Washington Street United Methodist Church on August 15 from 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm. The panel will discuss the impacts of COVID-19 in the Alexandria community, and will look at how you, as a community member, can support the responsive effort. Moderated by ACT for Alexandria, the panelists will include Kate Garvey (DCHS), Jennifer Ayers (ALIVE!), and Rev. Kameron Wilds (Rising Hope Mission Church).

Alexandria Bahá’í Conversation on the Equality of Women and Men

The Alexandria Bahá’í Community invites you to join a conversation on the Equality of Women and Men on Sunday, August 22 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm with guest facilitator Vasu Mohan. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá wrote “In the estimation of God there is no gender,” that “man and woman share all rights,” and predicted a “new age … in which the masculine and feminine elements of civilization will be more evenly balanced.” What are the implications for today’s debates about climate change, racism, human rights, rise in authoritarianism, terrorism, poverty, and more?  For the Zoom link (and recording of the session), contact Lauren Poon at lpoon@alive-inc.org

URGENT! No Contact Grocery/Supply Delivery Drivers Needed

Due to an increase in need, the Alexandria Health Department and Department of Community and Human Services seek 5 additional delivery drivers per day on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays to provide groceries and supplies to residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. Food and supplies need to be picked up at the ALIVE! Warehouse, located at 801 S. Payne Street at 2:00 pm and delivered to homes in Alexandria. Drivers do not come in contact with the quarantined clients. Must be able to lift 40 lb. bags and use stairs, access to City or personal vehicle, available Tuesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays from 2:00 – 4:00 pm for a 3-month commitment. Volunteers Needed at Old Town Festival of Speed & Style

Crazy about cars, fashion, and fun? We have an opportunity for you! Old Town Festival of Speed & Style has chosen ALIVE! as its local beneficiary. Sunday, September 5th, ALIVE! will have an information table at the event on the lower three blocks of King Street. We are looking for 2 volunteers per shift to talk about ALIVE! and hand out information. 1st shift 9:30 am – 12:30 pm. 2nd shift 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm. AEPP Volunteers Needed

Volunteers needed to support the Alexandria Eviction Prevention Partnership (AEPP) phone line and client intake process. Proficiency in Spanish or Amharic a plus, but not required. West End Business Association Treats ALIVE! to Lunch

On Saturday, July 31, the West End Business Association treated ALIVE! staff & key volunteers, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Department, and Workforce Development Center to gift cards from Wiygul Automotive Clinic and lunch from AC Sliders food truck. Staff and volunteers enjoyed individually packaged cheeseburgers, fried chicken, fried cod, and plant-based burgers with a side of tots. This generous gesture from WEBA is to recognize and thank local organizations dedicated to serving the Alexandria community during the COVID-19 emergency response.

Coldwell Banker Realty Food Drive

Thank you Coldwell Banker Realty of Alexandria for collecting food and raising $1,702 for the ALIVE! Food Program. Every weekend in July, they stood outside in the summer heat to collect donations and talk about ALIVE!’s work in the Alexandria community.

Feds Feed Families

The USDA office in Alexandria is collecting food donations for ALIVE! as part of the Feds Feeds Families government-wide campaign which encourages federal employees to give to food banks and pantries. On August 10, federal employees will drop off their food donations and the Alexandria Sheriff’s department will deliver the collected donations to ALIVE!.

ALIVE! collects food donations Thursdays 3:00 – 7:00 PM and Saturdays 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at 801 S. Payne Street. Donations must be from the current list of Accepted Food Donations. Visit ALIVE! Food page for details.

Housewares Referrals

List of Needed Items updated. Check back regularly as the list can change as our inventory changes. Visit the ALIVE! Housewares webpage for the list of accepted items.

Send all Housewares referrals to housewares@alive-inc.org with the following information:

  • Client’s name, address, cell number, and email if possible
  • Number of adults and children (with ages) in the home
  • List of needed kitchen items, dinnerware, appliances, bed and bath linens

New Paint and Carpets for ALIVE! Main Offices

Volunteer Alexandria Breaks with Impact (BWI) youth group put a fresh coat of paint on a downstairs office last week. This week, Eddie’s Carpets will install new carpets in the three upstairs offices thanks to Sue Goodhart at The Goodhart Group.
