The final numbers are in from #StampOutHunger and together we collected more than 9,000 pounds of groceries for the ALIVE! food program!

Thank you to everyone who left out donations, to our letter carriers who went door to door to collect these items, and to our amazing volunteers who sorted these donations and are getting them bagged for the next distribution.

ALIVE! Housewares Program assists persons in housing transition by providing basic housewares received from generous donors like you. Think about what you needed setting up your first apartment. Those are the same things our recipients need!

Right now our greatest needs are medium-size sauce pans, skillets, and bed pillows. If you are able to donate items please contact Janese Bechtol. If someone in your congregation is able to donate a bed please contact Mary Eileen Dixon.

ALIVE!’s Food Distribution Schedule

ALIVE! strives to provide nutritious foods through direct distribution to our clients and by supporting Alexandria’s food pantries, meal kitchens, public schools, recreation centers, and other community partners.

ALIVE! Food Distribution Calendar (May 2022)

Weekend Food Distribution:
ALIVE! distributes bags of food (groceries, produce, chicken, eggs, bread) at 3 sites one Saturday per month in the parking lot at each site. ALIVE! food distributions are for City of Alexandria residents. No is ID required.

Reusable Bags:
Please encourage referrals or clients to bring reusable bags to food distribution events so that ALIVE! can recycle them for future events. All reusable bags are accepted.

ALIVE! provides bags of food to specific neighborhoods and apartment buildings, in collaboration with our community partners, in the parking lot at each pop-up location. Drive-through and walk-up service available depending on site.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, May 18th from 3pm-7pm, and there are 6 appointment times still available.

Please consider donating to ensure a steady supply of blood is available for patients in our community.

Alexandria’s Successful Aging Committee is pleased to announce that its annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair is back in person this year! It will be held at the Lee Center at 1108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria on Thursday, May 19 from 10 am – Noon.

The morning will begin with a presentation by the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance talking about why falls prevention is so important, what your risk factors for a fall are, and what you can do to help prevent a fall.

After this presentation, attendees can visit various breakout sessions that include healthy cooking demonstrations with the Chef of Goodwin House, exercises for older adults with the city’s Recreation Department’s older adult fitness guru Rodney Bates, an interactive fall prevention workshop, and blood pressure and glaucoma screenings.
