Honoring MLK’s Legacy Through Service
ALIVE! was founded when a group of faith leaders were inspired by the Poor People’s March on Washington organized by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From their effort ALIVE! was formed, and for more than 50 years, generations of caring community members have passed the torch and worked to continue our mission.
On Monday, we continued to honor the words and works of MLK through service as ALIVE! partnered with Islamic Relief USA and students from Episcopal High School in Alexandria to package more than 100,000 pounds of food for upcoming ALIVE! distributions. These boxes included rice, cooking oil, flour, pasta, and other shelf stable staples.
Thank you to the 400 students who volunteered today as part of the MLK Day of Service and to Islamic Relief USA for this generous donation of food for Alexandria families in need.
Empty Bowls Alexandria on February 25th
ALIVE!’s 6th Annual Empty Bowls Alexandria will be held at the Durant Art Center in Old Town on Saturday, February 25th with all funds raised making an immediate impact in the lives of our neighbors in need.
The event has sold out every year we have hosted, and we anticipate that it will again in 2023, especially since it’s the first year we have held it since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Early Bird registration closes January 25 (early bird price is $75)

ALIVE!’s Food Distribution Schedule
ALIVE! distributes free bags of groceries (produce, chicken, eggs, bread) at three locations one Saturday per month. Please bring reusable bags to food distribution events so that ALIVE! can recycle them for future events. All reusable bags are accepted. ALIVE! food distributions are for City of Alexandria residents. No ID is required.

Alexandria BIPOC Small Business Grants
The Alexandria BIPOC Small Business Grant Program is an initiative providing grants to qualifying Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) owned small local businesses that enable the City to retain and grow existing businesses, and/or assist with start-up activities.

Free Vision Screening and Eye Exams
On Saturday, February 11, St. Joseph Catholic Church (711 N Columbus St) will be hosting a free vision screening and eye exams. Walk-ins will be permitted as time allows. To be added to the waitlist call (202) 234-1010 ext. 233 to be added (for Spanish, please use extension 230).

Join us at 1pm for Free Glaucoma Workshop. No registration is required for this. Join a doctor and learn how to save money and make your expensive glaucoma drops last longer. Attendees will receive a free nanodropper (while supplies last).
