ALIVE! Activities & Updates

The final results from Spring2ACTion have been announced and we are incredibly grateful to the 456 donors who contributed to ALIVE! during Alexandria’s annual day of giving. Together we raised $93,225.50. Thank you to everyone who helped us spread the word and for all that you do to support our non-profit community throughout the year.

There are a lot of events coming up in the next fews week, so please let us know if you’d like ALIVE! to highlight an event that your congregation is a part. Also, we’d love to hear if there’s a way to improve how we share information with you. Race Day Volunteers Needed
Lace up your running shoes and mark your calendars for May 8th! Port City Brewing Company is hosting the Rivershed Run 5k in Alexandria. Proceeds from this event will go to helping ALIVE! support our neighbors in need.
We are still looking for 10 additional volunteers to help out on race day. If you are able to join us on May 8th at from 8:30am-11:00am as a Course Marshall, at the Water Stop, or at the Finish line please let us know by signing up here. If your congregation would like to organize a group to help out please contact Ryan Willis at developmentmg@alive-inc.org.
Help Staff the ALIVE! Booth on May 22
The Old Town Festival of Speed & Style marks its 3rd annual return on Sunday, May 22 from 10:00am to 3:00pm.
The Old Town Festival of Speed & Style brings together exquisite cars and motorcycles, with enthusiasts of fashion, art, music, and style, to create a one-day festival of good energy and fun. It celebrates the heart and spirit of the Alexandria, VA community and highlights the elegance and style of Old Town. Proceeds from the event will benefit USO Washington-Baltimore, ALIVE!, and the Campagna Center.
If you are able to join us at the ALIVE! booth for a shift please contact Jenn Ayers at execdir@alive-inc.org. Shift times on May 22nd are: 9am-Noon, and Noon-3pm.

ALIVE!’s Food Distribution Schedule

ALIVE! strives to provide nutritious foods through direct distribution to our clients and by supporting Alexandria’s food pantries, meal kitchens, public schools, recreation centers, and other community partners.

ALIVE! Food Distribution Calendar (May 2022)

Weekend Food Distribution:
ALIVE! distributes bags of food (groceries, produce, chicken, eggs, bread) at 3 sites one Saturday per month in the parking lot at each site. ALIVE! food distributions are for City of Alexandria residents. No is ID required.

Reusable Bags:
Please encourage referrals or clients to bring reusable bags to food distribution events so that ALIVE! can recycle them for future events. All reusable bags are accepted.

ALIVE! provides bags of food to specific neighborhoods and apartment buildings, in collaboration with our community partners, in the parking lot at each pop-up location. Drive-through and walk-up service available depending on site.

The next Community Cookout with the Alexandria Police Department is on Tuesday, May 3rd at the Charles Houston Rec Center.

Please encourage community members to drop by for free food, to learn more about city support services, youth and family programs, free vaccinations, and more!

The National Association of Letter Carrier’s #StampOutHunger Food Drive is just around the corner!
Remind your family, friends, and neighbors to leave a bag of nonperishable food by their mailbox on Saturday, May 14, and their letter carrier will handle the rest! All donated food stays within the local community. Learn more: nalc-info.org/food-drive
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, May 18th from 3pm-7pm, and there are 16 appointment times still available.
Please consider donating to ensure a steady supply of blood is available for patients in our community.

Alexandria’s Successful Aging Committee is pleased to announce that its annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair is back in person this year! It will be held at the Lee Center at 1108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria on Thursday, May 19 from 10 am – Noon.

The morning will begin with a presentation by the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance talking about why falls prevention is so important, what your risk factors for a fall are, and what you can do to help prevent a fall.

After this presentation, attendees can visit various breakout sessions that include healthy cooking demonstrations with the Chef of Goodwin House, exercises for older adults with the city’s Recreation Department’s older adult fitness guru Rodney Bates, an interactive fall prevention workshop, and blood pressure and glaucoma screenings.
